Referral systems

Health Partners International works with stakeholders to strengthen referral systems to ensure the continuity of care and effective linkages between the different levels of care, from the household and community via the Primary Health Care level to referral hospitals.

We focus on establishing emergency referral systems which are a priority in developing countries. Effective transport and communication systems are essential in cases of emergencies, such as acute life-threatening illnesses and obstetric complications, so that referral hospitals are notified in advance about the referral of critically ill patients to facilitate emergency preparedness and transport is available.

HPI’s support to emergency referral systems has resulted in an increased access to Emergency Obstetric Care, which is crucial for the reduction of maternal mortality.
